Fun with a polarizer filter

I recently purchased a polarizer filter for my camera so that I could reduce the amount of reflections in photos. reading through a old copy of a photography magazine I found an article that showed you how to see the plastic stress marks on objects. The magazine’s approach was to use a polarizer film on top of a light box, along with a polarizer filter on the camera. I didn’t own a light box or a polarizer film large enough, but I realized that I did, its called a computer monitor. by showing a white image on the display I was able to replicate the effect without purchasing any more gear.

But you may notice that the back of the image is black and is still backlit, this is because you are able to rotate the polarizer to block all the light coming from the display, but since the light going through the tape is bent and diffracted, it does not get blocked and thus comes through as normal.

Rotating the polarizer causes the polarized light from the display to be “cancelled out”

The only editing done to the final image was some touch ups on the background as there was some dust on the display that I was using.
